Online Khabar
Kathmandu, October 25.China will supply its petro assistance — 1300 KL of oil — to Nepal, which has been facing an acute shortage of petroleum products, through Kerung. Nepali tankers will have to traverse about 365 km to bring oil from the northern trade point.
A week’s wait
Chinese oil will arrive in Nepal within a week, says Nepal Oil Corporation Spokesperson Dipak Baral. NOC has begun arranging tankers to fetch petroleum products from China.
Kerung lies 22 km north of Rasuwagadhi, which is 160 km north of Kathmandu. The Pasang Lhamu Highway connects Kathmandu with Rasuwagadhi. The tankers will have to cover a distance of about 365 km, while bringing oil to Kathmandu from the northern point.
The Chinese have said they will give petro aid through Kerung, Baral said. From which point will Chinese supply oil commercially is unclear at this stage, Baral said, adding that things will become clear after a formal agreement with China, for which preparations are already underway.
High-quality oil
Rumours that petroleum products in use in China are unsuitable for vehicles operating in Nepal are baseless, according to NOC. Petroleum products to be brought from China, according to Baral, will be of Euro IV standard.
The petroleum products in use in China are of higher quality than the ones in use in India, according to Baral. These products are suitable for vehicles operating in Nepal, he says.
“There’s no need to be suspicious about the quality of petroleum products in use in China.”
The cost factor
In the first phase, China is supplying 1,300 KL oil as assistance. How much of it is petrol, diesel and kerosene is not clear at this stage. And NOC has no plans to adjust the price of oil at this point.
“For bringing 1,300 KL oil, all we have to do is foot the transportation cost. So, there will be no change in the prices of petroleum products to be brought from China as aid. Fuel prices may vary when we start commercial import of oil from China,” says Baral.
Fleet being readied
NOC has directed its depots to ready top-condition tankers for bringing oil from the northern neighbour as the road is a bit rough.
The oil monopoly says it plans to buy petroleum products from China on a commercial scale after a study, once it receives the petro assistance.
